We would like to introduce you to Maxine, a gorgeous Roman Red 1962 Corvette Convertible owned by club members, Christopher and Nancy Bolen. Now, just how did Maxine get her name? Take a look at the clip on You Tube from the movie When Harry Met Sally and you’ll understand (fast forward to 2:57 and the 5th couple) – ANYONE would walk across a hot parking lot to see this gorgeous creature!
Christopher and Nancy are the 4th owners having procured her from Nancy’s father in November of 2013. It had been in his hands since 1987 and he rarely drove the vehicle for 27 years. However, Maxine wasn’t the beautiful swan she is today. In the late 70’s (early 80’s) someone turned the swan into a bit of an ugly duckling (at least by today’s standards). They changed the paint color from it’s original Roman Red to white and as Christopher was quick to say – “the previous restoration left a lot to be desired”.
Christopher and Nancy embarked on a 2 1/2 year restoration taking Maxine all the way down to the fiberglass for a full frame off restoration. 90% of the body was in pristine condition, but there were a few places where “bubble gum and chicken wire” had been used. Working with local craftsmen (Mayhem Motors and B-Macs), they got her back in shape. Christopher joked that Bill McDonald from B-Macs would call him saying “You need to come down to the shop”. Christopher would always bring his wallet knowing it meant – MORE MONEY. And, Nancy’s father would join the bandwagon happily advising that the additional expense was worth it. It wasn’t his money after all. One item that didn’t cost a cent was a jack. Yes, an original 1962 jack! How can that be? These are rare… Well, Christopher got another one of those surprise calls from Bill McDonald and he was bracing himself for another “costly” remedy. But, this conversation started with “I’m your new best friend”. It seems that Bill McDonald found an original 1962 Corvette jack just sitting in the back of his garage and he gave it to them!
Maxine was only 1 of 300 vehicles made in 1962 with a factory power top. That’s the only unfinished item as Christopher and Nancy are still sourcing the original 1962 components. When you have a chance, you really need to “walk across the parking lot” to meet Maxine. She has quite an attitude and a great “voice”. She has a sexy, smoky sound. There’s a true love affair between Maxine and her owners.
