This was it! This was THE event that really drew us to become members of RTP Corvettes. Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to display their car on the same golf course as the multi-million dollar Concours cars that are being judged? And, let me tell you, this weekend lived up to all our expectations!

But…it didn’t start out so well. Of course, mother nature decided to rain the day before the Concours when we were driving our 1960 Vette the 1 1/2 hours to Pinehurst. So, picture this….Driving a beautiful, vintage Corvette with towels stuffed all along the front dashboard to catch the water as it leaked through the openings where the convertible top does not seal well against the frame. Oh yeah, that’s what I call “Elegance”. Not to mention the cleaning job that had to be done – YET AGAIN!

We arrived the evening before the Concours. On this trip, we stayed with some dear friends of ours in Pinehurst. So we missed the Corvette on the Green Friday night and also the Continental Breakfast on Sunday morning. You just can’t crash at your friend’s house without spending some quality time visiting with them.

So the big day started with driving to the staging area to meet all the club members. The cars lined up early in the morning and the police arrived to escort us the short way to the event. Pretty neat. It was also really cool to drive up onto the golf course itself. You know it’s supposed to be wrong to drive your vehicle on the golf course, but that just added to the appeal. It was very organized and great to just follow along. The cost of displaying on the Fairway (right next to the main show field) was WELL WORTH THE MONEY! Just the fact that you were able to park right on the golf course in the midst of the action was worth the price of entry.

Have you ever gone to a movie that you couldn’t wait to see and you just built up this huge set of expectations only to have the movie fall short of them? Well, that did NOT happen with the Concours. The day’s events way surpassed all the expectations I had built up in my mind. From the opening ceremony of a bagpiper walking up and down the rows of show and display cars, to the military chorus singing patriotic tunes to a precision parachute team descending from on high right onto the show field. All I can say is WOW! Oh yeah, and the cars, judges and car owners were all really cool as well. You experienced just about every stereotype you would expect. Yes, there were bow ties. Yes, there were hats. Yes, there were “properly attired” individuals. It just added to the ambiance of the event and everyone was so nice. Plus, the Pinehurst members only club opened their doors for lunch. So you got a taste of the Pinehurst club experience as well.

The Concours day ended with a concert and it was great. Our Fairway parking area was right next to the concert stage. We were able to lounge by our cars and rock out to the music.

We were really sorry to miss the continental breakfast at the Barlow’s home on Sunday morning. From what we heard, that was a great way to top off the weekend. But, we didn’t want to dash and run from our friend’s who were gracious enough to let us invade their home for the weekend.
